Now on Display

"300 Years of European Marine Art" features 28 oil paintings and artifacts from several countries spanning more than three centuries. A variety of styles, subjects, locations and events are captured in dramatic oil paintings and with historical artifacts.

The earliest painting by the influential Dutch artist Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger dates to 1647-48 and is the oldest painting in the Burrichter/Kierlin Marine Art Collection.  Many 18th and 19th century works by artists Charles Brooking, William Dixon, Eugène Boudin, Thomas Buttersworth, Abraham Hulk, A. J. Antoine Roux and others represent several different countries.  Detailed and photo-realistic works by renowned 20th century marine artists Roy Cross, Mark Myers, Maarten Platje and Tim Thompson are also on display. Artifacts include a commemorative bronze medal from the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, the logbook from the 19th century American ship Mary Pennel and a beautiful marble bust of Lord Horatio Nelson, England’s greatest naval hero.

On display until April 24, 2009.

Views on the Mississippi: An Exhibit of Rare and Historic Photographs by Henry Peter Bosse

A new exhibit of rare and historic photographs by Henry Peter Bosse are now on display. View cyanotype photographs taken between 1883-1891 from the US Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District‘s collection. Many of the photographs have not been displayed publicly and include river scenes, towns, dams, bridges and boats. Bosse’s images document the Corps’ efforts to change the natural river into a commercial waterway. They are more than simple documentary photographs and are works of art with complex compositions and stunning views.
