Playful, adaptable, secretive and graceful the sleek North American River Otter is a wonderful and memorable image to behold, if you are one of the privileged few who catch a glimpse.
The River Otter is the master fisherman as it searches the watery deeps to seek and catch even the fastest of fish. With joyful persistence it feeds itself and it’s young in total devotion to family. I personally have watched a mother Otter with four pups go about the business of teaching her brood to fend for themselves. Each time she dove under the water the four young would carefully observe her every move and they were not alone. The fish around her would quickly flee in all directions to escape her grasp, some even jumping out of the water in a vain attempt to evade capture.
Looking at my River Otter, part of my continuing nature series, one can see that it’s created in a fanciful manner. Not quite realism but capturing the River Otter appears before us bright eyed and earnestly open handed; a presence to behold.
