Sacred Waters: Photographs from National Geographic Society
|
8/1/2013 -
10/27/2013
All across the world in religious and spiritual practice, doctrine, and blessed events, there are aspects related to water. This may be related to a specific location, like the Ganges River of India, or water seen as a symbol for life or rebirth as seen in many aspects of Catholicism. While we share one earth and many related gods, water is also a tie that binds humans through religious and spiritual practice. August through October at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum is dedicated to exploring this human spirituality and religiousness in relation to water.
Visitors can experience this through two partner exhibitions – The St. John’s Bible and Sacred Waters: Photographs from National Geographic Society. Sacred Waters features the photography of John Stanmeyer, who travelled the world in search of the many ways different cultures relate to water.
Sacred Waters is produced and traveled by National Geographic.

Illuminating the Word: The Saint John's Bible
|
8/6/2013 -
10/20/2013
The third exhibition in the MMAM’s 2013 Painting Series, and the partner exhibition to the Sacred Waters exhibition, reveals a different kind of painting – in medium, execution and purpose.
The Saint John’s Bible is a work of art and theology. A team of artists coordinated by Donald Jackson in Wales, and a team of scholars at St. John’s University in Central Minnesota have brought together the ancient techniques of calligraphy and illumination with an ecumenical Christian approach to the Bible rooted in Benedictine spirituality. The result is a living document and a monumental achievement. (www.saintjohnsbible.org/process).
The centerpiece of this exhibition is a set of original manuscripts created using an egg tempera painting technique, together with one volume of the high quality Heritage Edition of the project. These are partnered with quality reproductions highlighting biblical stories that relate to the spiritual aspects of water. This multi-faceted and ambitious project has travelled around the United States in many major museums and will be brought to MMAM audiences for the first time. A set of reproduction prints that further highlights this special opportunity is also on display at Winona’s Polish Museum.
Organized by the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and Saint John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota.

Tri-State Invitational: 3 Women from 3 States
|
10/25/2013 -
1/12/2014
The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a confluence of historical and contemporary art inspired by water. Moreover, the MMAM supports the work of some of the Minnesota/Wisconsin/Iowa region's most notable artists.
The grand finale of the MMAM's 2013 Painting Series is also its first Tri-State Invitational. To inaugerate this important event, the Museum has invited three women from the tri-state area to exhibit artworks of varying degrees of abstraction - all heavily inspired by the Upper Mississippi region's waterways. Featured artists include Julia Crozier (MN/WI), Jennifer Terpstra (WI), and Nancy Purrington (IA).
