"Spotlight on Norman Rockwell"

by Tom Daly, Curator of Education at the Norman Rockwell Museum

  Wednesday, July 7th

  7 p.m.

We are so excited to bring to Winona, Tom Daly, who serves as the Curator of Education at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Daly will be talking about Norman Rockwell as an artist and also will discuss the 16 prints on display at MMAM, which are on loan from the Museum he works at in Stockbridge.

Tom Daly will discuss Rockwell's processes using a variety of images, choices of imagery with regard to the reader's interest and the importance that the works from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn played in the artist's career.  Norman Rockwell was commissioned to create the illustrations featured for these two Twain classics in 1935 when George Macy of Heritage Press and Limited Editions Club books approached Rockwell. While fifteen of Rockwell's original paintings from this task reside in the Mark Twain Home and Museum in Hannibal, Missouri, MMAM currently has on display 16 signed original prints in the exhibition, Norman Rockwell’s Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

Thomas Daly is the Curator of Education for The Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge. The museum is located in a small town in western Massachusetts, the same town that Norman Rockwell lived in for the last twenty-five years of his life.  Daly has lectured at college campuses and museums around the country about Mr. Rockwell’s work, life, and times.  Daly personally crafts each of the presentations to fit the needs of the group being addressed.  His years of experience in the museum education field allow him to hone the program to the viewer’s interest. During his 13 plus years with the Norman Rockwell Museum he has taken on a number of different roles, all of them adding to his knowledge of the work of America’s favorite illustrator. Being a native of the area, he also has a unique view on Norman Rockwell.
